Drums and Shakers

These two ancient instruments are found in every culture in the world in one form or another. Often considered sacred, they complement each other in purpose and tone. Open backed drums, similar to tambourines but without the shakers, were commonly used throughout the Mediterranean region.  Laced drums were found among indigenous peoples in the Americas and Russia, among others.  Djembes come from Africa; Shekeres originated in Africa and are now popular in South America and the Caribbean.
